Fairytale: Snow White and the seven Dwarves

Snow White House: Home of the seven Dwarves in Bergfreiheit

Count's daughter became Snow White

Thanks to its many parks and avenues Bad Wildungen is a verdant city with an almost Mediterranean atmosphere. Much of the townscape, the parks and the unspoilt forests in the surrounding area lend a fairytale or even mystical air. There are allusions to nymphs, spring goblins or fairies everywhere - visitors are fascinated by the exciting, sometimes scary, stories and ancient myths and legends.

Enthroned on a mountain peak in the district of Altwildungen, facing the old city of Bad Wildungen, sits the proud baroque Friedrichstein Castle. This former seat of the Counts and Princes of Waldeck was erected in the 18th century in lieu of a medieval castle.

From here came Margaretha of Waldeck, the daughter of the count and sister of the founder of the mining village Bergfreiheit, who was poisoned at a young age during the middle of the 16th century. It is said that the Brothers Grimm borrowed the fate of the beautiful princess to use as a guideline for their fairytale "Snow White and the Seven Dwarves".

One can still trace the steps of the princess and the dwarves and also learn an exciting thing or two about the story in "Snow White's Village"  Bergfreiheit behind the seven mountains (12 km from Bad Wildungen situated in the middle of the Kellerwald. Insights into mining during the late medieval period can also be found in the interesting show mine Bertsch (Besucherbergwerg Bertsch) where copper was once mined, the small mining museum (Bergamtmuseum) and the fascinating and lovingly-designed Snow White House at the centre of the village, all of which allude to the origins of the fairytale of Snow White.

The famous fairytale comes alive here. Which is why Bad Wildungen and its district of Bergfreiheit are both members of the German Fairytale Route which runs through here.

Several times a year, lovingly recreated fairytales are performed on the tranquil, idyllic natural stage above the village of Bergfreiheit. Snow White and the Seven Dwarves can also be met in person during the traditional Easter fire, the egg run or even in autumn during the apple pressing festival. And they all love to pose with the young visitors for you to take a snapshot for the family album.
